This is second of a series of ships that were lost in the Cape Horn Islands, at the southern tip of South America. The drawing comes from the visitor's chart of this geographic area. x/Barca inglesa. Costa NE de Isla de Los Estados - Incendiada en alta mar y uiego abandonada.

Avdat Acropolis
City of Avdat--The city's acropolis was the high portion of the area which includes a fortress surrounded by a wall, and in turn, an area of worship, which includes two Byzantine churches standing in close proximity.

A Corbita and a Ponto
These drawings are the ones referenced in Lionel Casson's "Ships and Seamanship, In the Ancient World," Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore and London, 1995, Figure # 137. The ship pictures in the figure indicated above were not complete because of damage to the mosaic. I have redrawn them as probable sail rigs of the period.

The Barque Provencal
In southern Europe the inclination toward the lateen sail was strong and with good reason. The barque provencal , called elsewhere than along the shores of the Mediterranean by other names; did not differ materially from other small vessels. Small craft in great variety are to be found everywhere in the Mediterranean differing both in form of hull and apparel. Many of these are quite generally called "barks," but the term is generic.
